Shopify Product Image Size: The Specs and the PNG Surprise

Search for the right Shopify product image size and most guides repeat one number: 2048 by 2048 pixels. That number is correct, but it is only part of what Shopify documents, and one line on Shopify’s own page surprises many sellers who were taught to avoid PNG for photos. This guide sticks to what Shopify’s Help Center says on its product media page, and flags where it is worth checking for yourself.

The Numbers Shopify States

Shopify says product and collection images can be any size up to 5000 by 5000 pixels, or 25 megapixels, and must have a file size smaller than 20 MB to be added. For square product images, it says a size of 2048 by 2048 pixels usually displays best. Notice the wording: 2048 is the size that usually displays best, not a minimum, and 5000 pixels is a ceiling, not a target.
Shopify also creates different sizes automatically when you add an image, so a large version can serve the product page while a compact version serves collection pages. That means uploading one high quality master per image is enough, and you do not need to prepare a separate file for each placement.

The PNG Surprise

Many sellers assume JPEG is the right format for product photos. Shopify’s own page says otherwise: “The best file type for most product images is PNG, followed by JPEG,” according to Shopify’s product media types page. It lists TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC, and WebP as other accepted types, and notes that animated GIF and WebP files are supported too.
The page also explains why format matters less than it seems. Shopify’s Imagery service works out which image formats your customer’s browser supports, then automatically displays the image in the best format available. In other words, what a shopper receives is decided by Shopify, so the quality of the file you upload matters more than the label on it.
Our guide on file formats for product photos covers the general tradeoffs, including file weight. For a Shopify store specifically, Shopify’s own order of preference is the stronger authority. If large PNG files become slow to upload or manage, a high quality JPEG is the next option Shopify lists, so test both on your own catalog instead of assuming.

Keep the Aspect Ratio Consistent

Shopify points out that product images appear side by side on collection pages, where they can show at different sizes. To make them display at the same size, it advises using a consistent aspect ratio for all featured, or main, images. Themes can also use the Shopify CDN to request consistent sizing for images saved in different ratios.
This is where many catalogs look uneven. A square image next to a portrait image makes a grid look inconsistent even when each photo is well edited. Choose one ratio for main images and hold to it, then leave margin around the product so a theme crop does not clip it. Our guide on color consistency across a shoot covers the matching problem on the color side.

Video and 3D Limits, Briefly

Shopify’s page also lists limits for other media. Uploaded videos can be up to 10 minutes, up to 1 GB, and up to 4K resolution, in .mp4, .mov, or .webm format. For 3D models, files can be up to 500 MB in GLB or USDZ format. If you are deciding whether motion is worth the effort for a product, our guide on product video vs photos helps with that call.

Where to Double Check

Shopify documents upload rules across more than one help page, and third party guides note that the pages do not always list identical limits or formats. Before a large catalog upload, confirm the current numbers on the help page for the exact media type you are using, and test with a few files first.

A Practical Shopify Image Checklist

Export masters at 2048 by 2048 pixels for square images, as Shopify says usually displays best.
Stay under the ceilings: 5000 by 5000 pixels, or 25 megapixels, and a file size smaller than 20 MB.
Pick one aspect ratio for all main images so collection pages line up.
Leave margin around the product so your theme can crop without cutting anything off.
Keep a full quality master and compare PNG and JPEG exports on your own photos.
Check the result on a phone, since many shoppers browse there, a point covered in our guide on mobile product image optimization.
If you sell on Shopify and other channels, our guide on product image specs compared and our multi channel product image workflow show how to prepare one master set for all of them.
