In general, gradient refers to a transition between one thing and another, often depicted visually by a procession from white to black through shades of gray. A color gradient is one type of image that subtly progresses from one color to another and is available in Photoshop to use in many ways. You can add them as a fill to a shape, as a background, or even use them to make gradient text. To make a seamless blend of two or more colors in your designs, you must know how to use the Gradient Tool in Photoshop. Here’s how to use gradient color in Photoshop:
1. Choose the Gradient Tool from the Toolbox.
You can press G on your keyboard to select Gradient Tool.
2. Set The Gradient Mode To Classic Gradient.
Use the drop-down menu in the Options Bar to select a Gradient Mode. Select the Classic Gradient mode and remember to add a new layer to ensure you are editing non-destructively.
3. Pick the Gradient type you want to use in the option bar.
Choose between one of the five gradient types using the icons at the top. There are several types of gradients, including Linear, Radial, Angle, Reflected, and Diamond.
4. Pick the colors you want to use for your gradient.
You can use the default colors or click on color swatches to select your colors. To add more colors to your gradient, click on the middle color swatch and choose another color.
5. Drag the Gradient Tool across your document to create the gradient.
With the new layer selected, click and drag on the canvas to apply your gradient. The farther you remove the tool, the longer the gradient will be.
6. To change the direction of the gradient, haul the Gradient Tool in another direction.
Depending on how far you move between two gradient points, you can create a hard or soft edge appearance to your gradient.
How to Change Existing Gradient Colors?
- When you use the Gradient Tool, it is recommended that you use Gradient Mode, which adds a Gradient Fill layer. When using a Gradient Fill layer, you can easily change the color of an existing gradient.
- To switch the color, double-click the Gradient Fill thumbnail on the Gradient Fill Layer. This opens the Gradient Fill panel. Click on the gradient preview bar to launch the Gradient editor.
- In the Gradient Editor, change the color by double-clicking on the color stop below the bar and selecting a new color from the Color Picker. Click OK to confirm the new color. You can edit the colors further using the method detailed in the first section.
- You can also edit the color of a Gradient Fill layer using the Properties Panel, as explained in detail in the previous section. This panel offers quick access to adjustment controls. Ensure the Gradient Fill layer is selected and open the Properties Panel to access these settings.
The Gradient Tool in Photoshop is a wonderful tool with limitless opportunities for customization. It will do it all if you apply a gradient to text, a background layer, a layer mask, or a shape.
